Can I install my own roof, or should I hire a roofing contractor?

If you normally do your own home repairs and improvements, this is one installation you can definitely do yourself. However, a word of caution if your home has a steep pitch or is more than one story tall. Roofing these types of homes is more about safety then it is about the roofing application itself. The danger of a workplace accident is high, the OSHA requirements are numerous, and if you plan to have some help putting that roof on, you will need insurance on your helpers.

Installing a new roof can be learned with some book reading and Google videos. A handy person should treat it just like the other jobs he or she does around the house. But keep in mind, because of the skill and knowledge associated with installing a roof system, manufactures generally will not issue a warranty if the product is not installed by a licensed professional.
